We are delighted to announce that Nick Baumann, a skilled journalist with deep experience leading teams and driving national political coverage, is joining The Post as deputy politics editor.
Nick, who will serve as the principal deputy to the senior politics editor, will help guide the National politics staff in executing ambitious coverage of the 2024 presidential campaign, the White House, Congress and state politics across platforms.
Nick joins The Post after spending more than a decade editing political news, enterprise and investigations. He has a sophisticated understanding of politics at this moment in America and the digital media landscape, as well as a vision for distinctive coverage. He has earned a reputation among colleagues as an empathetic leader with a keen eye for story targets who is committed to helping develop the talent of reporters and editors.
He most recently served as deputy Washington bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times, where he led coverage of the 2024 campaign and edited daily, enterprise and feature stories about Congress, the White House and the nation’s immigration detention system.
Before that, he served as politics editor at The Atlantic, where he ran much of the magazine’s digital coverage of the 2020 election and the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. His team published stories on Rep. Jamie Raskin’s loss of his son ahead of the Capitol riot, what liberals misunderstand about pro-Trump Latinos and how covid turned one Colorado county into a national battleground.
Before joining The Atlantic, Nick was a senior enterprise editor at HuffPost. Stories he worked on won the 2016 Knight Award for Public Service and the 2017 Writers Guild Award. His team’s reporting prompted Nevada prisons to stop using guns to control inmates and elicited an FDA warning that led to the shuttering of a company that bragged of health benefits from infusing people with “young blood.” He also supervised an investigation into jail deaths that was a finalist for the Livingston Award and launched an email newsletter that grew to nearly 200,000 subscribers in its first year. Nick also has worked as a senior editor at Mother Jones and was a blogger for the Economist.
