By: (AP) New York Times business reporter Diana Henriques has been awarded the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting for her reports on insurance companies and lenders selling misleading policies and loans to American soldiers and their families, Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government announced Tuesday.
Henriques' reports revealed that many of those who sold the policies were former military officers using their backgrounds to take advantage of trusting soldiers.
The annual $25,000 prize is awarded by the school's Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy.
The finalists also included:
? Paul Donsky and Ken Foskett of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, for a story on waste and mismanagement in the Atlanta public schools.
? James Fallows of The Atlantic Monthly, for a piece on the origins and consequences of America's occupation of Iraq.
? Steve Suo and Erin Hoover Barnett of The Oregonian in Portland, for an investigation of methamphetamine abuse in Oregon.
? Ken Armstrong, Florangela Davila, and Justin Mayo of The Seattle Times, for a look at the "crushing caseloads and financial conflicts" of public defenders in Washington.
? Brett Shipp and Mark Smith of WFAA-TV in Dallas, for broadcasts on how Texas state regulators failed to penalize insurance carriers for denying benefits to thousands of legitimately injured state workers.
