Osnos of 'Chicago Tribune' Wins Elliott Prize for Journalism on Asia

By: E&P Staff Evan Osnos of the Chicago Tribune has been awarded the Asia Society's Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Journalism on Asia for a series looking at the global effects of China's growth. Osnos, who is the paper's Beijing bureau chief, will receive $10,000 at an awards ceremony in June.

"[Osnos'] ability to trace the reverberations of broad and complex issues, showing their tangible everyday effects on the lives of readers is at the heart of truly effective civic journalism and truly embodies the spirit of this award," said Norman Pearlstine, Senior Advisor at The Carlyle Group and former Editor-in-Chief of Time Inc., who chaired the jury which selected this year's winner.

Honorable mentions, awarded for the first time, went to Paul Watson of the Los Angeles Times for articles about conflict and corruption in Afghanistan, and Jonathan Watts of The Observer/The Guardian for articles relating to urbanization and development in China.
