By: Nancy Ayala Tiempos del Mundo, the weekly pan-regional Spanish-language newspaper launched in 1996, has closed its print editions, confirmed Jonathan Slevin, spokesman for News World Communications, parent company of the paper. It will continue to operate as a Web site only at www.tiemposdelmundo.com.
The newspaper had five editions in the United States and was published in 17 Latin American countries, with a total BPA certified circulation of more than 120,000 and 423,000 readers per week. The total number of online users was not available.
The final print date will be June 29.
Significant cutbacks are planned at Tiempos del Mundo, Slevin said. "The current editorial team, which is robust because of the print product, will be sadly but significantly diminished," he said.
Carlos Verdecia, who was appointed editor in chief in late 2005 after six years at Hispanic Magazine and as the founding editor of El Nuevo Herald (1988-1994) in Miami, has left the company, Slevin confirmed.
Shuttering the Hispanic paper was a corporate decision based on an overall assessment of the various properties, Slevin said. Details are still being worked out, but Tiempos del Mundo is expected to share resources for its online unit with United Press International (UPI), which is also owned by New World, as is The Washington Times. The publications are based in Washington, D.C.
In 2005, Tiempos del Mundo was redesigned and recently had a surge in new advertising, sources confirmed.
And in April, the newspaper was awarded two Gold Honor distinctions during the annual National Association of Hispanic Publications, for Best Business section and for Best Technology section. It also received bronze awards for outstanding Special Section and for the Most Improved Publication of the Year.
