 Now that user-generated content has become an essential ingredient to daily news, it helps that the rules of engagement are getting some polish. Crowdsourcing is always a messy business, especially if a news organization wants to avoid torpedoes to its credibility.

But a trio of some of the nation's leading social media editors shared tips — many of which were crowdsourced from other experts — for how to work with user-supplied content and still stay on the right side of journalism's higher virtues and abiding rules.
