By: E&P Staff The Philadelphia Inquirer is launching the Sudoku National Championship on Oct. 19-21, hosted by New York Times crossword puzzle wiz Will Shortz.
The championship will have three levels for puzzle participants -- beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The competition is open to national and international players and will take place at the Philadelphia Convention Center.
"The Inquirer is thrilled to sponsor the first national sudoku championship," Inquirer Publisher Brian Tierney said in a statement. "At the same time we will be significantly strengthening our print and online sudoku puzzles."
The paper is making a three-year commitment to sponsor the championship. The winner will earn a spot on the U.S. sudoku team. In addition, the advanced-level winner will receive $10,000 plus expenses paid for travel and accommodations to the World Sudoku Championship in India.
The intermediate winner receives $5,000 and the beginner-level winner will get a prize of $3,000. Other trophies and cash prizes will be awarded.
