POLITICO Journalism Institute opens applications for 2023 session

POLITICO today announced that applications are being accepted for the 2023 session of the POLITICO Journalism Institute (PJI), an intensive training program designed to advance newsroom diversity.

The 10-day program for undergraduate and graduate students offers hands-on training for students interested in sharpening their skills at the largest politics- and policy-focused newsroom in the nation. The next full in-person session, scheduled for May 30 to June 9, 2023, offers a unique opportunity for emerging journalists to have their work published by POLITICO.

“We're thrilled to accept applications for the 10^th year of PJI, one of the most highly regarded programs preparing a diverse new generation of journalists entering the industry," said John Yearwood, editorial director for diversity and culture at POLITICO. "With strong support from our partners, we're more convinced than ever that these training and mentorship opportunities will continue to impact the industry for at least another decade."

American University and the Maynard Institute will once again partner with PJI, as they have since its inception. “The daily rush of news comes at us so fast and furious that citizens have a difficult time knowing with certitude what to believe, what is accurate and whom to trust,” said Sam Fulwood, dean of the American University School of Communication. “But we at American University are dedicated to making sure that future generations of journalists are equipped with the skill and knowledge to tell the stories that protect and preserve our democracy. Our partnership with PJI is a vital cog in our efforts to create pathways for emerging and diverse journalists.”

Programming for PJI includes interactive workshops, sessions with industry leaders and mentor pairings. It also takes participants behind the scenes in the historic places where national stories are covered, including the White House, Congress and the National Press Club. Participants split time between the POLITICO newsroom in Arlington, Virginia, and the nearby campus of American University, where they also are provided housing. All costs including housing, meals and transportation are covered by POLITICO.

Applicants who are rising juniors or seniors at accredited four-year colleges or universities are given preference. Members of affinity journalism associations are encouraged to apply. All applications must be completed and submitted by 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 5, 2022. Click here to apply.
