By: Dave Astor Scott Stantis has begun a weekly podcast relating to "Prickly City," the conservative comic he does for Universal Press Syndicate.
"To my knowledge, no other syndicated daily comic strip artist has ever attempted this," Stantis told E&P. "It allows me to flesh out the strip and explain the ideas behind it more fully."
Stantis, who described the podcast as "a lot like an audio blog," did his first one last Saturday. The second -- accessible via
PricklyCity.com -- is slated for tomorrow. Each podcast lasts five to 10 minutes.
"I'm keeping it light and funny," said Stantis. "I'll talk about either the strip that just appeared or what's likely to come next and maybe get into why the characters said or reacted how they did."
The cartoonist expects a lot of young adults to tune in, since many podcast listeners are in that age group. "Newspaper editors? big challenge is attracting younger readers," commented Stantis. "Having interaction with them via podcasting will encourage more young adults to turn to print or tune into their local newspaper Web site.?
Stantis -- who's also a staff editorial cartoonist for The Birmingham (Ala.) News and Copley News Service, and a contributing cartoonist to USA Today -- plans to do a podcast from this June's Association of American Editorial Cartoonists convention in Sacramento.
The 2004-launched "Prickly City," which runs in about 75 newspapers, stars a naive coyote pup and a conservative girl.
