By: Jennifer Saba Community newspapers experienced a slight decline in circulation volume in Q2 compared to Q1, down almost 2% as a group according to the latest audit data for the first six months of 2009 from Circulation Verification Council (CVC).
The news comes before the Audit Bureau of Circulations releases its latest circulation report for the six months ending Sept. 2009. The losses are anticipated to be steep.
According to CVC, 45% of community newspaper publishers said circulation increased. The heaviest declines were in the southeast region.
The organization cited the Boulder City News in Henderson, Nev., as the largest circ gainer, up 29.3%. Greenspun Media, which operated the Boulder City News,
abruptly folded the publication this week.
Additionally, CVC found that alternative newsweeklies' circulation is flat (up 0.1%) from Q1 to Q2. The Urban Tulsa (Okla.) Weekly said circ was up 2.4% for instance. Fifty-four percent of alt weeklies said circulation advanced in Q2.
Shoppers experienced a 1% quarterly decline, with American Classifieds Kansas City as the biggest gainer, up 28.5%. Circulation at ethnic publications was flat, (up 0.1%). La Jornada Latina Detroit advanced its circulation 5.4%, the largest increase for that group.
"Overall, the news for community and niche publications is quite positive considering the economic conditions," Tim Bingaman, president and CEO of CVC, said in a statement.
