Robert W. Decherd winds down his 40-year career this week, having restored his family’s newspaper to distinction, guided its parent company through a shifting environment and left downtown Dallas greener and more vital.

“I hope I’ve conducted myself in a way that my fellow citizens appreciate — that there is a high-minded way of approaching all the complexities of an urban environment like ours,” he said. “Tone is everything.”
