Samantha Willis, an award-winning journalist who has worked widely throughout central Virginia, has been selected as the next editor-in-chief of the Virginia Mercury.

Willis has been the Mercury’s deputy and commentary editor since January 2023 and previously wrote for the publication as a freelancer. She will succeed Sarah Vogelsong, who after almost five years has decided to leave the Mercury to explore other reporting opportunities, beginning March 18.

“Samantha is a gifted journalist who understands the Mercury’s mission of providing Virginians thoughtful, comprehensive and accessible information about how their state government works,” said Vogelsong. “She is widely respected, unflagging in her efforts to bring new perspectives to the public’s attention and well-versed in Virginia history, politics and culture. I know the Mercury will thrive under her capable leadership.”
