By: Bob Balzer, publisher of The Sun newspaper, is leaving to take a university post.
Balzer will step down on June 22 to become executive director of the capital campaign for California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. The multiyear campaign will raise funds for news buildings, maintenance, scholarships and professorships.
Balzer attended the university and he has served on the University Educational Trust that manages endowments and scholarships.
"One of my passions is to improve this geography through better education," he said Tuesday.
Until a new publisher is chosen, Balzer's duties will be handled by Steve Lambert, vice president of news for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group and editor of The Sun and Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.
"The great publishers have certain things in common. They have integrity, a commitment to the community. They have a deep and passionate understanding of the role of a newspaper, and they're good people. And Bob is all of those," Lambert said.
