By: E&P Staff San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis admitted Tuesday that her office had been wrong in barring a North County Times reporter from a news conference she held earlier this week.
The Times, based in Escondido, Calif., reports that Dumanis issued the apology during a meeting with the paper?s acting editor, Dan McSwain.
The announcement stems from a June 18 incident in which Times reporter Teri Figueroa was denied admittance to a news conference at which Dumanis issued a public health alert on the sale and purchase of drugs without prescriptions.
The decision to bar Figueroa was a response to a May 10 Times story
regarding the theft of palm trees at MiraCosta College, allegedly by a
MiraCosta professor. The article irked Dumanis, who had asked the paper not to run the story since she felt it violated an agreement her spokesman had made with Times reporter David Garrick not to publish the charges and/or plea bargain that had been filed.
Dumanis today said that everyone was "back on track," and that Times
reporters will not be barred from future news conferences. The Times adds that the district attorney and acting Times editor McSwain were able to address their grievances on the May 10 MiraCosta story and have moved on from the incident.
