'San Diego Union-Tribune' Editor Announces Retirement

By: Elaine Williams Karin Winner, editor of The San Diego Union-Tribune, announced on Tuesday that she will be retiring at year's end.

Winner has served as editor for the past 15 years, though her journalism career began in 1976 as a reporter for The San Diego Union. After the merger of the Union with the Evening Tribune in 1992, she became executive editor, and three years later was appointed editor in chief.

?It?s been an honor and privilege to work with such dedicated and passionate journalists over the course of my career at the Union-Tribune,? Winner told the paper?s staff. ?I?ll always look back with enormous pride at what we?ve accomplished and now I look forward to being an avid reader of your hard work.?

Under Winner?s watch, the Union-Tribune won two Pulitzer Prizes (in 2009 and 2006), a Society of Professional Journalists Association award, and a ?General Excellence? award in 2008 for best overall newspaper from the California Newspaper Publishers Association. She has been a member of the Pulitzer jury six times, and served as president of the California Society for Newspaper Editors in 1989.

?Karin is highly respected, not only in our newsroom but also in the journalism industry,? President/Publisher Ed Moss told his paper. ?I?m particularly grateful for having worked so closely with her the past six months, and I know the newsroom, and the entire company, will miss her insight, expertise and experience. We all wish her the very best as she enters a new and exciting stage of her life.?

No successor has yet been named, but Moss said that he will start searching immediately.
