By: E&P Staff Santa Cruz (Calif.) Sentinel Editor Tom Honig told his newsroom last Friday that eight of its 38 full-time positions will be eliminated as of July 1.
The paper reported that the cuts, amounting to a fifth of the staff, follow the April lay-offs of 33 printing and packaging staffers, when production and distribution moved to the San Jose Mercury News ('Squeezing Money from Iron,' April E&P). Both papers are operated by the California Newspaper Partnership, which is owned largely by MediaNews Group.
Publisher David B. Regan told the Sentinel he originally thought the cuts "wouldn't affect the newspaper at all. I still think we can put out a good paper."
The Sentinel reported that it will devote more resources to the Internet and meet with readers to determine the sort of coverage they want.
It quotes Honig saying that "we're going to continue to make the paper smarter and provide people with the information they need in a new era."
