Saving American journalism: The information needs of a democracy

Posted

On Thursday evening, Feb. 10, PBS Books hosted The New Era of Modern Journalism: a conversation with Evan Smith.  He is the CEO and co-founder of The Texas Tribune, a pioneering nonprofit, nonpartisan media outlet, in conversation with journalist Errin Haines, editor-at-large of The 19th*.

Having recently announced his departure from The Texas Tribune, Smith discussed his background and career, the current state of journalism and its future.

The conversation touched on the importance journalism to our democratic system, the threat posed by misinformation and disinformation, the pressing need for diverse voices in coverage and in newsrooms, the danger of news deserts and sustainable business models, particularly for local journalism.

A recording of that discussion is available here.
