Serving the underserved

Launched from a kitchen table, Carolina Public Press delivers accountability journalism across North Carolina

Posted

Started at former business reporter Angie Newsome’s kitchen table a dozen years ago, Carolina Public Press has spread from Appalachia to become an award-winning statewide provider of high-impact accountability reporting.

Newsome has continued to build and grow CPP by listening to the needs of people in North Carolina who were struggling to find meaningful, factual local news. One key piece of advice she offers for those hoping to replicate her success: “If you don’t know how to do something, don’t sweat it. Find someone who does.”

Newsome and her successor as executive director, Kara Andrade, discussed how to build a sustainable quality news operation from scratch with the Medill Local News Initiative’s Penelope Abernathy. This email exchange has been edited for length and clarity.
