Mark Edwards, the sports editor for The Decatur (Ala.) Daily News, received the Bill Shelton Award at the 36th annual Alabama Sports Writers Association convention on June 10.
The award honors a sports writer?s work and its influence on his community. Named for the late Cullman (Ala.) Times sports editor, who died in 2000, the award is voted on by the writer?s peers.
Edwards won an additional award at the ceremony as a runner-up in the ?Best Tennis Feature Without a Deadline? category for his April 2006 piece on Austin High School tennis player Meleana McCutcheon.
Edwards has worked at the News since 1990, and had served as assistant sports editor and Alabama beat writer before accepting the position of sports editor in 2003.
During his career at the News, Edwards has taken home six ASWA awards, and has placed in the top-10 for the Associated Press Sports Editors national writing contest four times, which is a record for the News. Additionally, Edwards received 13 awards from the Alabama Associated Press Managing Editors contests.
