Star Tribune announces 'Minnesota Matters' conversation series

Statewide event series will feature conversations on strengthening media and communities

Posted

The Star Tribune Media Company, the largest news organization in the Midwest, has announced "Minnesota Matters,” an event series taking place over the next several months. The series includes a robust schedule of community events across Minnesota, focused on strengthening journalism and communities in our state. The purpose of Minnesota Matters is to connect Star Tribune leadership and journalists with community members who can help strengthen the organization’s journalism at a critical moment in the industry.

“We want to help build a better Minnesota by connecting the people, ideas and stories that strengthen our communities,” said Steve Grove, publisher and CEO of the Star Tribune. “Minnesota Matters events will help us learn from people across Minnesota about how we can best strengthen our journalism at a challenging moment for local news, in Minnesota and beyond. The transformation we’re going through at the Star Tribune will only be successful if we’re listening to the community.”

Details and registration information for each event are included below, with more information to be announced in the coming weeks.

Each event will feature a brief program and conversation between Star Tribune personalities and prominent local newsmakers. Following that, the audience will be invited to participate in an optional roundtable discussion designed to solicit feedback on media coverage in their community. Participants who are not currently subscribers will have the opportunity to redeem a three-month free trial subscription of the Star Tribune.

“Our intent with Minnesota Matters is to have authentic conversations with people throughout our state to inform our future coverage,” said Kyndell Harkness, head of culture and community for the Star Tribune. “We’re excited to partner with people throughout Minnesota to ensure we’re tell our state’s full and beautifully complex story.”

As a result of last year’s listening tours, the Star Tribune implemented meaningful changes aimed at providing better coverage across the whole state including adding reporting resources to Greater Minnesota, improving website functionality, enhancing real-time coverage and much more.

These listening tours will go a layer deeper, exploring five major coverage areas — News and Politics, Food and Culture, Business, Outdoors, and Sports — where the Star Tribune plans to invest resources more deeply.
