Texas Journalist Shield Bill Approved in House Committee

Posted
By: A proposed shield law for Texas journalists won approval today in a House committee, meaning it now moves to the full House of Representatives.

The House Judiciary Committee passed the bill 8-0. It already had been approved in the Senate.

Journalists would get limited immunity from testifying in court cases or disclosing the identity of confidential sources under the legislation, which has been pushed by news media representatives.

Thirty-three states and the District of Columbia have some form of a shield law, and others are considering it. That's according to Senator Rodney Ellis -- a Democrat from Houston -- who is a leading sponsor of the bill.

The shield law bill is SB 966.
