The New York Times: Alex Garcia joins Opinion as a deputy editor for Op-Docs

Posted

I’m thrilled to announce that Alexandra Garcia is joining Opinion Video as deputy editor. In this newly created leadership role, Alex will oversee the editorial vision and strategy of Op-Docs, which she will manage. In addition, she will oversee production operations and shape submissions from outside filmmakers.

She will work closely with Christine Kecher, our senior commissioning editor, who will continue her leadership in editorial curation, as well as partnerships, fundraising, and festivals, and Yvonne Ashley Kouadjo, our Op-Docs series producer. She will also closely collaborate with Jonah Kessel, the other deputy editor in Opinion Video.

For those who haven’t had a chance to get to know Alex, she joined The Times 10 years ago in the newsroom’s Video department, where she produced and shaped award-winning short filmexplanatory video and interactive projects. She then helped launch “The Weekly” and was a director/producer on The Times’s documentary series “The New York Times Presents,” where she made films on topics ranging from culture to international news. Before joining Op-Docs, she had been working as a senior visual editor for Headway.

Her work has been honored with three news and documentary Emmy awards and over a dozen Emmy nominations, as well as in the Edward R. Murrow, National Press Photographers Association’s Best of Photojournalism, World Press Photo and Pictures of the Year International contests. Her short films have screened in and been recognized by film festivals worldwide. Before coming to the Times, Alex was a fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard and a video journalist at The Washington Post.
