The New York Times announces new hires on Digital News Design

Posted

I am excited to announce two new hires on the Digital News Design team.

Joanne Lee has joined as art director, visuals. In this role she will serve as the lead designer on the Social Visuals team, producing social-first visual storytelling, innovating on design systems across a range of on- and off-platform surfaces and mentoring colleagues across the newsroom on tools, production and editorial workflows.

Prior to joining The Times, Joanne was a visual and UX designer at Rest of World, a nonprofit tech news publication, working on editorial designs that won the 2024 National Magazine Award for Design presented by the American Society of Magazine Editors. Previously, she was at The Washington Post, where for six years she was a senior designer on the news design team. Born in Auburn, Alabama, and raised between Atlanta and Seoul, Joanne graduated from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

Nick Llanton has joined as the weekend staff editor on the Social Visuals team, where he will find visual solutions for news, features, enterprise and investigative projects, bringing the best of the Times’s storytelling to our growing social media audiences.

Before joining The Times, Nick was a senior social producer at Hypebeast, where he specialized in photography, videography and branded content. There, Nick captured, edited and designed a wide range of fashion, celebrity and lifestyle content, crafting it into immersive stories for millions of followers on social and editorial platforms. Nick has covered the Olympics, the Sean Combs trial and various tech launches, and he’s excited to bring his passion for both features and news to The Times. Nick is originally from Florida and relocated to New York City in 2017, where his dedication to photography and the ever-evolving landscape of social media has guided him to this next chapter.

Please join me in welcoming Joanne and Nick.
