The Root, a G/O Media brand and one of the largest sites covering Black news, politics, culture and opinion, announced six new hires: Video Lead Adriano Contreras, Senior Writer Angela Johnson, and Staff Writers Stephanie Holland, Noah A. McGee, Murjani Rawls and Kalyn Womack.

“The Root’s mission of providing unflinching news commentary and analysis with its own unique point of view is more critical than ever,” said The Root Editor in Chief Vanessa De Luca. “Our growing team will help build upon this mission in 2022 with a series of content initiatives, including a revamp of The Glow Up Style Awards, The Root 100, The Root Institute, Small Business Spotlight and Protect Black Women, a series meant to ensure that Black women are given the support they deserve.”

This year will be a transformative one for the brand, says De Luca, who recently shared her vision for The Root’s future. The Root will serve not only as a daily destination for news and cultural coverage centered on issues core to the Black community — voting rights, police brutality and social justice, among them — but it will also offer opportunities for its audience to present and participate in solutions.
