The Washington Post: Tara McCarty joins Metro as first visual enterprise editor

Announcement from Local Editor Mike Semel and Deputy Local Editor Maria Glod:

We are thrilled to announce that Tara McCarty is joining Metro as our first visual enterprise editor.

Tara joins us from the Design team, where she has had her hand in so much memorable journalism. Most recently, Tara played an integral role in both the digital and print design of our Smithsonian "racial brain" project. She also created the landing page and reformatted the stories of our Unaccountable policing series, constructing a more user-friendly and enticing reader experience.

Tara’s creativity and visual thinking were on display when she approached us with ways to tell the rats-in-D.C. story in a new, accessible and fun way. Working with Dana Hedgpeth and Joe Fox, she came up with Cheddar, a city rat and an incredibly fun and interactive video game.

It’s that inventiveness and originality that we know will invigorate Metro’s visual journalism.

Before Tara arrived at The Post in May 2020, she was director of print design for the Tampa Bay Times. She worked her way up in St. Petersburg from the printing plant, to copy clerk, intern, designer and director.

She holds a B.A. in mass communication, journalism and media studies from the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg.

Tara misses the beach. So, when she is not designing, she is looking for places to sit in the sun, read historical fiction and sing Taylor Swift songs to her bichon, Lily.

Please join us in congratulating Tara and welcoming her to Metro. She starts in her new role Aug. 28.
