By: Jim Rosenberg TKS (U.S.A.) announced at the annual Nexpo trade show and conference here that it sold it first new two-page-across, two-page-around press.
The two-around singlewide will go into the new plant to be built for the 41,000-circulation Frederick (Md.) News-Post, the owners of which are investing $44 million for land, plant, and equipment. A press installation has yet to be finalized.
TKS?s new CT4000 UD (unit-drive) press will be installed in Frederick as two lines, each with three eight-couple (full, four-over-four color) towers and a 2:3:3 jaw folder. The press layout includes provision for an additional tower on each line.
One line will be fed by four reelstands, the other by five. Two towers on each line will be splittable -- configured to be able to print two webs, according to Sales Manager Dean Jacoby.
The sale and Nexpo?s first visit to Dallas were fitting events to celebrate the 25th year of the Japanese press maker?s U.S. subsidiary, based in nearby Irving, Texas.
Several years before its U.S. unit was incorporated, TKS entered the market with a two-around singlewide, when it built such a press for the Santa Barbara (Calif.) News Press. That older and different press is still operating, at The Oak Ridger in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Before Nexpo, Printing Press Services International of Preston, England, sold tower additions to the McClatchy Co. flagship, The Sacramento Bee.
The first of seven four-high towers is slated for delivery in September, with the entire job to be completed in 2007. One tower will go on the Bee?s Goss Colorliner; the remaining six will extend its Goss Metros.
