The Blade in Toledo, Ohio, has filed a state notice outlining plans to end publication Dec. 31 and permanently lay off 116 employees, according to reporting by 13abc. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice, submitted Oct. 23, says the layoffs would occur during the two weeks following the newspaper’s final publication date.
The filing follows a September announcement that owner Block Communications would close the newspaper unless it found a buyer. It establishes a formal timetable for the planned shutdown of a publication that has served Toledo for nearly two centuries.
