By: (AP) The Topeka Capital-Journal and Harris Enterprises' Kansas newspapers were co-winners of the Burton W. Marvin Kansas News Enterprise Award, presented Friday.
The Marvin award, which recognizes outstanding reporting by Kansas newspapers, is presented by the William Allen White Foundation. It is named for the foundation's first director and former dean of the University of Kansas School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
The Capital-Journal was honored for work by reporter Tim Carpenter, who revealed "favoritism and ineptitude" in Topeka's municipal courts, the foundation said. His findings prompted one judge to be fired and the chief municipal judge to resign under pressure.
Harris Enterprises' seven Kansas newspapers and its Topeka bureau examined consolidation efforts of the state's nearly 4,000 units of local government. The reports exposed barriers that have prevented a serious, comprehensive consolidation of state and local governments and the merging of school districts.
The Harris newspapers in Kansas are The Hutchinson News, The Salina Journal, The Garden City Telegram, The Hays Daily News, Parsons Sun, The Ottawa Herald and The Chanute Tribune.
