Tribune Co. Reports Losses, Interactive Gains

By: E&P Staff Tribune Co. said today that consolidated revenues during its most recent reporting period (which ended May 27) totaled $406 million, down 11.1% from $457 million in 2006.

The company's publishing revenues in May were $292 million -- down 10.3% from $325 million last year. Advertising revenues slipped 11.8% to $230 million, compared with $261 million in May 2006.

While retail-advertising revenues were down 1%, preprint levels were flat for the reporting period. National advertising, however, fell 17.9%, and classified ad revenues are down by 20%.

Real estate fell 30%, help wanted decreased by 20%, and automotive is down 7%.

There was, however, one bright spot: Interactive revenues, which are primarily included in classified, were up 22% to $22 million, due to growth in all categories.

Circulation levels are down 6.2% due to declines in single-copy sales and continued selective discounting in home delivery.
