Two Minnesota Weeklies to Merge

By: E&P Staff Two weekly papers in Minnesota are set to merge this fall. The New York Mills Herald and the Perham Enterprise-Bulletin will become one paper on Oct. 1.

Kevin Cederstrom, editor of the Herald, announced the change in an editorial in Thursday's editions of the Enterprise-Bulletin. "I could bore you with the business reasons, but I?ll try not to," Cederstrom wrote. "I?d rather look ahead at this opportunity to create a new publication that holds on to journalism tradition in this area as well as cultivates new ideas."

Few details of the merger were announced by Cederstrom, but he did disclose that the staffs would be consolidated and only one paper would be produced. The Herald and Enterprise-Bulletin had previously merged their sports staffs in an attempt to expand coverage.

Both papers are published on Thursdays and are based in Otter Tail County, in Western Minnesota. The Enterprise-Bulletin has a circulation of around 3,200, while the Herald has a 1,600 circulation.

"New York Mills will not lose its identity, nor will Perham. All the 'Hometown News' that is so vital to a local newspaper will remain within the pages of this East Otter Tail publication," wrote Cederstrom. "One staff, one publication and one goal - to continue to deliver all the news that impacts New York Mills, Perham and the surrounding area."
