By: E&P Staff The metros aren't the only newspapers experiencing staffing cuts and walkouts. The publishers of two small newspapers in North Carolina left abruptly, reported the Yadkin Valley Times News in East Bend, N.C.
Michael Mulligan, publisher of The Mount Airy News, and Rebel Good publisher of The Tribune in Elkin, resigned on Monday. Good told the Valley Times News there was a "culture gap" with the papers' new owner Heartland Publications.
Heartland took over the operations of the daily Mount Airy News, the tri-weekly Tribune, and its four sister publications last week from Mid-South Management Co. based in Spartanburg, S.C.
As part of the purchase, about 12 positions were cut at the Mount Airy News and Tribune. The managing editors at both papers were eliminated. At the Mount Airy News, the circulation manager, a pre-press production operator, a lifestyles editor, and two staffers in the ad department were laid off. The Tribune lost five other positions including a classified manager.
Calls placed to executives at the two papers as well as to Heartland Publications have not been returned.
Heartland, based in Old Saybrook, Conn., operates more than 30 publications many of which are based in the Southeast.
