Ministers have turned down the Press industry’s version of a new royal charter to set up a press regulator, the BBC’s Newsnight reported.
The decision was taken by a meeting of a sub-committee of the Privy Council, which approves new royal charters, yesterday.
It now has to be ratified by a unanimous vote of the full Privy Council meets on later today. A final decision will be announced tomorrow.
