By: E&P Staff Reuters reports that Sahar al-Haideri, a married mother of three and a journalist working for the Aswat al-Iraqi news agency, was killed in Mosul, a town northwest of Baghdad.
The independent agency, which already suffered the death of a colleague earlier this week, said that al-Haideri was on a "death list" that had been issued by a group linked with al Qaeda.
The month of May had the highest journalist mortality rate since the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, with 12 journalists killed. In total, at least 105 journalists have been killed since the invasion began, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
The Iraqslogger site, which closely monitors such killings, reports: "President of the Syndicate of Journalists in Iraq's Kurdistan region Abdul Ghani Ali Yehya said that Al-Haydari, a member of the syndicate, 'was followed and targeted by gunmen and we knew this. She is a new victim for the Iraqi press,' he added.
"Sahar Hussein al-Haydari lived in Mosul and worked for a number of media institutions. She joined VOI on January 11, 2004. Al-Haydari was born in Baghdad in 1962 and had a bachelor?s degree in media. She is survived by her husband and three daughters.
"Last week, VOI lost another of its correspondents, Nezar al-Radi, who was killed by unidentified gunmen during his participation in a workshop for journalists in Missan."
