By: E&P Staff Gannett Newspaper Division selected the Trendsetter News thermal platesetter from Creo Inc., based in Vancouver, British Columbia, to print USA Today at 13 company-owned U.S. print sites.
The Honolulu Advertiser is the first to print USA Today with a Trendsetter, using Creo's Squaresport technology. In its first two months of production, in November and December, Gannett ranked the Advertiser first for print quality among USA Today's 36 print sites. The plant prints USA Today on its new MAN Roland Regioman presses.
The Advertiser opened its new plant in August 2004, following purchase of two Creo Trendsetter NEWS 70 platesetters, which are used to produce the 141,341-circulation Hawaiian daily.
Creo's board of directors recently approved a plan for the company's acquisition by Eastman Kodak Co. (E&P Online, Jan. 31), which also plans to buy the stake of partner Sun Chemical in its Kodak Polychrome Graphics joint venture (E&P Online, Jan. 12). KPG is Creo's principal competitor in the sale of thermal platesetters to North American newspapers.
