By: E&P Staff Former Orlando Sentinel sports editor Van McKenzie will receive the 2007 Red Smith Award for excellence in sports journalism. The prize, presented annually by the Associated Press Sports Editors, is a lifetime achievement honor and is regarded as the top award in sports journalism.
McKenzie, who died in January after battling cancer for three years, was the associate managing editor for sports at the Sentinel.
He also worked during his career at the Ocala Star-Banner, Today (now Florida Today), St. Petersburg Times, New York Daily News, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and The National.
In an article about the award, the Sentinel called McKenzie "a bold innovator and inspirational leader," whose sections "were known for their innovative approach to design and presentation, with a touch of humor always thrown in to engage readers."
