'Washington Post' Launches Locals-Only Web Experiment

By: E&P Staff The Washington Post, which this summer shut down its hyperlocal Web site targeting Loudon County, Va., on Wednesday launched an experimental site intended to be an all-local online destination.

"We have always served two distinct audiences, a national one and a local one, and our desire for this new local homepage is for it to reflect what D.C.-area residents really want," Post Local Editor Emilio Garcia-Ruiz said in the announcement of the site, www.washingtonpost.com/local in the "Web Buzz" section of the newspaper's home page.

The site will feature local breaking news, metro-area analysis and commentary from Post columnists such as Robert McCartney, Petula Dvorak and John Kelly, and local sports and entertainment news and guides.

"By doing this in beta, the Post will, for the first time, truly evolve the product as our readers use it and provide feedback," Jonathan Krim, Local Innovations editor, said in a statement.
