GBH is laying off dozens of employees, the Boston public station announced on Wednesday as the media outlet faces “financial headwinds.”

After GBH had warned of cost-cutting moves a couple of months ago, the station said it has cut 31 workers from 13 departments — about 4% of the station’s workforce.

“This is painful because those individuals are our friends and colleagues, people who have dedicated themselves to our mission and the work we do,” Susan Goldberg, president and CEO of GBH, wrote in an all-staff note.

“We’re grateful for the contributions they have made to GBH,” Goldberg added. “Except for a few people, everyone’s last day in the office is today.”

The public station, like many other media outlets, is facing “financial headwinds,” she noted. The station is dealing with a $7 million budget gap.

“To ensure we are set up for editorial success and financial sustainability into the future, we took these steps — aligned with where our business is headed — and we are making some programming changes, as well,” Goldberg wrote.
