Winners of Second 'Trip With Nick Kristof' Contest Announced

By: E&P Staff The New York Times has announced that a Chicago high school teacher and a St. Louis medical student have won the second "Win a Trip With nick Kristof" contest, and will travel with the columnist to Rwanda, Congo and Burundi, with all their expenses covered by the newspaper.

The winners are Will Okun, who teaches at Westside Alternative High
School in Chicago, Ill., and Leana Wen, a medical student at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. On their trip with Kristof, the two will write blogs and keep video diaries of their experiences for TimesSelect (the paid section of the newpaper's Web site), as well as for a special MySpace page at www.myspace.com/winatrip. The winners' videos will also air on MTV?s college channel, mtvU, and on mtvU.com.

The winners were chosen by Kristof from over 2,000 applicants, who sent essays about why they wanted to participate in the Times trip. Kristof selected 24 finalist essays, all of which can be read at NYTimes.com/WinATrip.

"Will and Leana will bring very different perspectives to this trip," said Kristof in a written statement. "He is an experienced teacher who wants to share the beauty of Africa with American young people, and she is a medical student who wants to change the world. I am eager to see what they discover on this trip and how it affects them, and to sharing that with our readers."
