By: E&P Staff A contract worker was cut in half in a conveyor belt accident Saturday morning at the Chicago Tribune's Freedom Center production plant.
Isaiah Shannon, 44, was found dead, caught in the conveyor belt about 10:30 a.m., the Tribune reported in an article by Matthew Walberg and Mary Owen.
Chicago police concluded the death was an accident, but it was not clear how it had occurred. An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday.
The Tribune quoted Shannon's niece, Felecia Bland, as saying she had been told by detectives that the conveyor belt machine "somehow got started" as he was working on it. She said detective told her the death was quick.
Shannon worked for a labor contractor, and had been assigned to Freedom Center for the last year and a half, Bland told the Tribune.
The Tribune is conducting an internal investigation, and cooperating with an investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
OSHA last investigated a Freedom Center accident in July 2005 when two electricians were injured when a short circuit created an electric arc flash while they were installing new press equipment. The Tribune reported the newspaper was fined $9,000 for lacking personal protective equipment and safety training.
