A season of gratitude

Posted

November is a wonderful month. Fall brings cool, crisp air, beautiful color and football to much of our country. And Thanksgiving. Well, I love Thanksgiving — great food, parades, football and most of all — the central message of gratitude.

During October, Mike and I have traveled to several in-person conferences that have felt positive and uplifting. I have been able to meet many of you who I only knew by name during my 20+ years supporting Mike's news media industry activities. I have experienced some outstanding content and seen first-hand how so many in our industry are working hard to move forward in these turbulent times. Probably the highlight of these conferences for me was my honor to announce E&P's Publisher of the Year at America's Newspapers' Senior Leadership Conference. Judi Terzotis, president and publisher of NOLA.com, The New Orleans Times-Picayune and The Baton Rouge Advocate, exudes enthusiasm, positivity and passion for local media. You’ll enjoy reading her profile here in the November issue.

This issue is jam-packed with stories about what is best in our industry. The story about The Tennessean's Black Tennessee Voices and Latino Tennessee Voices will inspire you in your diversity, equity & inclusion (DEI) efforts. Speaking of DEI, E&P is launching our Diversity Spotlight with a column from Larry Graham this month. We’re excited about this new content vertical, which we hope will inform and inspire you. And the results of E&P’s COVID-19 survey will tell you how news media companies large and small are navigating the pandemic waters successfully. If that isn’t enough, the ING/E&P Operation All-Star winners will show you what great things are happening on the operations side of our industry.

Finally, we have a cautionary tale for you with our story about hyper-partisan news sites. Whether you’re aware of this trend or not, I’m sure you’ll read something that will make you think. We must do what we can to protect our local media coverage, community standing and trust in our news media.

As you read this issue, the team at E&P wants you to know that we are so grateful for you, our readers and advertisers. The amazing stories that we hear across our industry keep us excited about our collective future. Together, we can thrive.
