The National Press Photographers Association has published guidance to help visual journalists prepare for the 2026 elections, addressing polling-place access, photography restrictions, voter privacy and safety. The resource covers early voting, Election Day and vote counting.
NPPA emphasizes that entering a polling place, photographing a voter and photographing a marked ballot involve separate legal questions. Rules vary by jurisdiction, and a press credential does not automatically guarantee access or an exemption from camera restrictions. The association recommends contacting election officials before assignments, requesting written media policies and confirming where journalists may photograph and conduct interviews.
The guide also encourages newsrooms to establish check-ins, emergency contacts and exit plans, including for freelancers. Its ethical guidance cautions against staging voting scenes or treating photographs of long lines, arguments or malfunctioning equipment as proof of fraud.
